KS2 Christmas Concert 2020
Merry Christmas from all the staff and children in Owl, Bear, Jaguar and Eagle Class!
Please enjoy music from all the classes both individually and as a whole Key Stage.
You can also see each class' Book Week art and Christmas tree decorations.
Welcome to Term 2!
It was so lovely speaking to your families and sharing your successes last term; we really appreciate all the support parents and carers give to help you achieve your best. We have a busy term ahead in the run up to Christmas!
PE days are Mondays and Thursdays - please continue to come to school in your PE kits on those days.
Forest School dates are every other Tuesday:
1st December (Backhouse Woods)
Pleas ensure you bring warm clothing (including hats / scarves / gloves etc) and waterproof outer layers as well as wellies on these days. We will be going out and getting muddy!
What will we be learning?
Our question this term is 'Is All Change Good?' and we will be thinking about climate change and the impact of this in our own country and around the world. We will be learning All About Animals (including Humans) in Science. We have already started learning about the human digestive system and will be completing some interesting experiments to see how our bodies digest food! In Art we will be learning about the artist Wassily Kandinksy and trying our hand at recreating some of his techniques, and in Forest School Mrs Milward will be helping us to improve our tree identification skills. In PE we are completing Multiskills challenges with Elite and football skills on a Thursday. In RE we are learning from other religions when thinking about right and wrong, and the difference between life rules and laws.
In English we will be writing stories, newspaper reports and poems all about 'change' and Mrs Morsley is really excited to introduce a new book called 'The Whale' to you too! We are working on lots of spelling rules involving suffixes and we are working hard to include these new rules in our writing.
We will be finishing our unit on addition and subtraction in Maths using the bar model and part-whole methods to help us solve word problems. We will also be starting to learn about Fractions and multiplication and division. We will be continuing to practise our times tables every day and are starting the 8X table this week too.
We are continuing to support everyone's wellbeing and emotional and social skills as much as possible. With Lockdown 2.0 in effect now, this is really important. Change is happening all the time and by talking through our feelings - good and bad - we can all help each other navigate some tricky situations.
Please continue to read as much as you can, it really makes such a huge difference! We will be setting weekly challenges on Spelling Shed to support your work in class, and Time Tables Rockstars is getting relaunched with a shiny new competition too - keep your eyes peeled! More information about how we are supporting children in the event of a bubble shut down will be coming soon.
Finally, please remember to contact Mrs Morsley or Mrs Milward via the office if you have any concerns / questions - we can arrange phone calls or respond to emails in a much safer way than meeting face to face.
We can't wait to see what amazing things you can achieve this term, Bears!
Spelling Shed and Times Table Rockstars
You should all now have the correct passwords for Spelling Shed and Times Table Rockstars, so please use these websites regularly, as part of your homework, to practise your weekly spellings and times tables.
PE will be held on Mondays and Thursdays. Children need to come to school wearing their PE kit and remain in their kit for the day.
CHANGE TO FOREST SCHOOL DATES
Forest School will now happen on a Tuesday.
The dates for Term 1 are:
Tuesday 15th September
Tuesday 29th September
Tuesday 13th October
Welcome back to school Bears!
We can’t wait to see you, we are really excited about the term ahead and getting to know you all better.
Here is some important information about the coming term that will be really helpful but we’re sure you have plenty of other questions too; feel free to ask your teacher at school or invite an adult to drop us an email via the office and we will answer them.
We know that many of you may be feeling nervous about returning to school after such a long time; please don’t worry. We will be spending lots of time getting to know the new routines and settling in. In the first term we will be creating lots of opportunities for wellbeing activities, focusing on PSHE and mindfulness to help us get used to the ‘new normal’ and to transition comfortably into more formal learning. Our topic question for the term is ‘What do living things need to survive and thrive?’ and we will be learning about living things and their habitats, writing diary entries, exploring different environments and creating new ones! Our long term plan will be uploaded shortly to the class page so you can see what’s in store. We will be planning lots of outdoor learning to enhance our curriculum too.
Reading and Homework
We will send home reading books on the first day based on the level you were reading before lockdown happened in March. This will be reassessed within the first two weeks of term and adapted accordingly. You will be given two reading books; one to go home to be read with an adult, and one to read at school. Reading books can be changed on Thursdays when you will need to bring in your book and reading record.
Homework will be structured in the same way as last year; we will continue to use Times Table Rock Stars and Spelling Shed and will be setting weekly challenges through these platforms. A topic grid will be sent out with a range of activities on; please complete one challenge per fortnight. Homework can be handed in on a Thursday. Please be as creative as possible; we would love to display your learning to share your efforts with the class!
Forest School and PE
Forest School will take place every other Wednesday, as specified in the school diary (available on the website). Once a term you will be going off site to Backhouse Woods where we have created our own Forest School site in a private woodland that has no public access. On all Forest School days, you will need to come to school wearing appropriate clothing; please make sure you always have a raincoat and suitable footwear (the entrance to Backhouse Woods gets very wet and muddy and therefore wellies will be essential as soon as wet weather sets in). You may wish to bring a small rucksack to carry your coat, snack and water bottle in.
PE days will be confirmed in the following week, and we will post information on this page as soon as we can confirm.
For parents and carers:
Please ensure that the school has up to date contact details and medical information.
We really want to keep communication as open as possible between home and school, however, with the guidelines put in place to keep everyone as safe as possible, it will be hard to have a quick ‘catch up’ at the back door at drop off or collection time. Please feel free to call the office to arrange a phone call or face-to-face meeting should you need to; the office can also pass emails on to us should you prefer to email. We are always free to talk about any issues as they arise.
